With about 21 items per person and 1,623 donations, the Chesterfield Township plant is the winner of the first Can for a Cause event. They will receive a prize and the traveling trophy for 1st place.

MacLean-Fogg as a whole was able to donate 14,426 items to local food pantries and every participating plant surpassed their goal of 1 item per person! This exceeds all expectations for the first company food drive and leaves an enormous impact on our communities. Thank you again to all who participated!​

The Rotational Program Takes on the Carolinas

The MacLean-Fogg Manufacturing Management Program (MMP) is a two-year rotational program that allows high potential recent college graduates to make a measurable impact early in their professional careers. Saegertown Plant Achieves 100% Participation in Lean Basic Program

Saegertown began Lean Basic classes in July of 2013 and is excited to have reached 100% trained. They still have a challenge, which is, “How do we make sure that we give people the time and the resources needed to complete their deliverables?” Currently, their plant is at 58% certification rate. Their 2016 certification goal is 100%.

MFCS Sales Office Move

After 15 years, the MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions sales office has moved to a new location at 6001 N. Adams Road, Suite 250, Bloomfield, Hills, MI 48304. The new office building is about 3 miles south of the previous Rochester Hills, MI location. Instead of a standalone building with warehouse space that wasn’t being used to the fullest and costing more than necessary, the MFCS sales office downsized into an office building.

MacLean Curtis Keeps Moving Forward

As the site for the new MacLean Curtis facility in Mooresville is being prepared and the building construction begins, the team at MacLean Curtis in Cornelius, NC is taking full advantage of the opportunity to lay out the new facility with a clean slate. Utilizing a series of kaizens as part of a 3P process, the team has identified areas in which improvements can be implemented that will greatly impact the efficiency of the new facility.

Operational Transformation: 5S

A few years have passed since moving into our Troy, MI factory. Troy has stamped over 500M stainless steel parts, assembled over 80M wheel fasteners, and shipped product to customers around the world. With those large production volumes come many thousands of tons of scrap metal, tens of thousands of gallons of lubricants, dust from millions of nut bodies, dirt brought into the plant from thousands of semi-trucks and many other sources. The 5S program helped keep it all in check.

Intern Contributes to Continuous Improvement

At the conclusion of his summer internship, the engineering intern at MFCS Saegertown presented an overview of the vast list of projects in which he was involved. One project of interest was backing up and organizing over 600 PLC programs used at Saegertown. His goal was to create functionality through order, and make a central location where users can easily find what they are looking for. He did what he set out to do, and trained the users on the system.

EPC SPE Innovation Award Finalist

The Engineered Plastics Division of MFCS was recently honored when a component we designed and manufactured was nominated by the Society of Plastics Engineers for a 2015 Automotive Innovation Award in the Safety Category. Specifically the nomination was for a flexible sensor bracket sonically welded directly to the fascia skin in a 2015 model year new performance car. The awards ceremony was held November 11th in Detroit Michigan.

Curtis Hosts a Community Baby Shower

They say that the best way to a person’s heart is through their stomach. With that in mind, MacLean Curtis hosted its Second Annual United Way Community Baby Shower Bake Sale for a week in May 2015. Donations received were used to purchase essential baby items for the United Way to distribute to newborn babies most in need.

Material handlers often comment that they have to spend several minutes at the beginning of their shift searching for a forklift. When they find a forklift, it isn’t in any particular location and is sometimes in use. A team decided to take this on as their PDCA project and looked at spaghetti diagrams of the forklifts to identify the most frequented locations and paths taken. They identified times when most searching was taking place.

Lean Leadership was developed in 2014 in Mundelein to support leaders in their role of facilitating 5-S and PDCA. The Lean Leadership curriculum has reached another MFCS facility, Chesterfield. During six one-day classroom sessions, the management team at Chesterfield is learning the profound meaning of each of the five S’s and gaining a deep understanding about how to facilitate PDCA problem solving.

Five MFCS facilities are sponsoring senior design projects at Michigan Technological University (MTU). The projects are part of the Mechanical Engineering – Engineering Mechanics Senior Capstone Design Program. MTU Capstone Design is a 2 semester long (~9 month) program that gives senior students exposure to real world experience. It is a very fast paced and challenging program.

Maynard Wins GM Supplier Quality Excellence Award

In the fall of 2014, MacLean Maynard was a member of a select group of suppliers to General Motors to win the 2014 Supplier Quality Excellence Award. From all of the suppliers around the world, only 1,506 suppliers qualified to receive this award. Even more impressive, this was the third straight year MacLean Maynard has received this award. Only 80 suppliers in the world have been able to do this.​

MFCS Visited by High Schools' Tech Campus

In early January 2015, the MFCS Mundelein facility hosted a class from Lake County High Schools' Technology Campus (Tech Campus). Tech Campus has a class, which has completed projects, such as reverse engineering remote control cars, while utilizing 3D modeling software, Autodesk Inventor. The class pulls from different high schools in the area that have an interest in a technical background.

F-150 Artwork Displayed at Ford Rouge Factory

When Barry MacLean, a member of the Board of Governors for the School at the Art Institute of Chicago, visited the 2012 Student Exhibition, he found one piece to be particularly striking. Annalee Levin, the artist, sought to create a piece that updated traditional American Arts and Crafts with a theme representing modern America. The result, was a hand-embroidered needlepoint pillow. Not just any ordinary pillow, but a full scale Ford F-150 pick-up truck front end rendered in needlepoint.

When one of our key customers recently requested involvement for an under-hood beautification initiative, Engineered Plastics Company (EPC) was asked to respond with costs and timing for re-designing and re-tooling our current rubber hood levelers. These parts would be integral to the significant 2013 launch of this customer’s 2014 full size pickup trucks. Innovation kicked in and EPC was able to develop a better performing, more cost effective solution.

Mundelein, Illinois September 28, 2012 — Duncan MacLean, President of MacLean-Fogg Component Solutions, announced the ground-breaking of an 86,000 square foot precision component machining facility at its Metform location in Savanna, Illinois. This investment in infrastructure, machinery and equipment is expected to top $30 million and create more than 50 new jobs within the next 2 years,” explained Matthias Praus, Vice President and General Manager at Metform.
